SCARBOROUGH STEAM RECORDS 1987 cont

In 1987 Clifton Carriage Sidings (York) closed, the coaching stock for the SSE was now drawn from Heaton (Newcastle). What would have normally been an ECS (empty coaching stock) movement was turned into a profitable exercise.

BR offered tickets for sale on these ECS trains which utilised Celebrity Heritage Diesel Traction. Two Class 20s diesel locomotives had been repainted and named and they hauled the trains from Newcastle to York, via the coastal route, and back. On July 26th No 4472, Flying Scotsman the SSE rostered steam loco derailed in the sidings at York so rather than cancel the Scarborough Spa Express, NE Region Control gave permission for the Class 20s to continue to Scarborough. This was the only occasion when the TEES-TYNE SPA EXPRESS train with matching headboard visited Scarborough.

Diesel loco 56120 brought the train forward to Scarborough. 60009 followed light engine with the intention that it would double head with the Class 56 on the return to York. Because of an incompatibility of air brake fittings this did not happen.  56120 took the train back to York and another diesel took the train back to Kings Cross.
